Engelbert Humperdinck (1854–1921) was a German composer of the late Romantic era. He is best known for his opera Hänsel und Gretel (1893), based on the fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm and one of the most frequently performed German operas. He studied under Richard Wagner, whose influence is clearly audible in his music.
