Gioachino Rossini was an Italian composer of the late 18th and early 19th century and one of the most important figures of operatic bel canto. He wrote more than thirty operas, the most celebrated being the comic opera Il barbiere di Siviglia (1816). He was known for his melodic wit and rhythmic vitality.
