La Traviata is a three-act opera by Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi, which premiered in Venice in 1853. The libretto was written by Francesco Maria Piave, based on Alexandre Dumas fils' novel La Dame aux Camélias. The opera tells the tragic story of the courtesan Violetta and her love for Alfredo Germont, and is one of the most frequently performed operas in the world repertoire.
