Philipp Schaller, artistic director of the Herkuleskeule in Dresden, has been one of Germany's most-performed cabaret writers for many years. His bitterly sharp texts are performed every night not only at the Keule itself, but also at the Berliner Distel and by Gisela Oechelhaeuser, Erik Lehmann, Michael Frowin, Ellen Schaller, and many other cabaret artists. Seven years ago Schaller stepped onto the stage himself, and has been building a growing fanbase ever since.

He prefers asking questions to lecturing the audience on morality. He doesn't rail against those in power - he turns the spotlight on himself: ruthlessly and with tremendous comic effect.

In his first Best-Of programme, Philipp Schaller delivers the texts that matter most to him - timeless and sharply topical, performed and read aloud, ranging from the absurdly silly to the pitch-black, from the sly to the macabre. Not always funny, but consistently comic.

Schaller doesn't play characters - he finds his material within himself, holding up a mirror to our absurd desires, vanities, cowardices, and double standards. He deliberately sits between every stool, which he considers the most productive position for finding common ground in a divided society. Irony is his vehicle for navigating the ideological trenches between right and left, climate activists and climate deniers, gender-star advocates and old white men. Only on the question of peace or war is there no room between the stools - a theme that has run through Schaller's programmes for many years.
