PAUL BERNEWITZ TRIO - Modern Piano Trio
Jazz Studio Nürnberg, Nuremberg, Germany
Paul Bernewitz p / Sebastian Claas b / Jonas Sorgenfrei dr
The trio around Leipzig pianist Paul Bernewitz blends refined chamber music with compelling groove. Together with drummer Jonas Sorgenfrei and bassist Sebastian Claas, Bernewitz has developed a distinctive band sound: profound, dynamic, responsive.
They perform atmospheric original compositions that flow lyrically but can also be rough and angular - alongside tributes to Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington, and Maurice Ravel. The trio also adapts Conrad Paumann, a 15th-century Nuremberg organist, and lets the final movement of Charles Ives' second piano sonata from 1919 - dedicated to Henry Thoreau - be reborn with ample space for improvisation. They regularly return to Broadway as well, reviving familiar jazz repertoire.
