Summer Elbe Voyage towards Rio - HAMBURG - CUXHAVEN
Cap San Diego, Hamburg, Germany
A journey like the old days: aboard Cap San Diego, we set sail once more on a course "Richtung Rio". The departure itself is a highlight - passing the lively St. Pauli Landungsbrücken and the impressive Blohm + Voss docks, the Elbe opens up before us with its unmistakable urban character.
After the Elbe beaches of Övelgönne and the passage past Teufelsbrück, the ship follows the green hillsides of Blankenese. Off the historic ship-greeting station Willkomm Höft comes a time-honoured moment: we dip the flag - and are ceremonially bid farewell with the national anthem, just as all the great vessels once were when setting out on distant voyages. The further downstream we travel, the wider the river grows: nature-protected banks, the lock of the Kiel Canal to starboard, and finally open water towards Cuxhaven. Ever further out - into the sun, with Rio in our hearts.
This voyage is more than a trip - it is a living piece of maritime history.
Throughout the journey, Cap San Diego can be explored on all decks, with every manoeuvre experienced up close - in the engine room as well as on the bridge. The volunteer crew is on hand for any questions and always ready for a good seafarer's yarn. They have plenty to tell - they sailed every ocean when Cap San Diego was still an active cargo ship. Today, Cap San Diego is one of a kind worldwide: nowhere else will you find a larger, fully seaworthy vessel of this class from the era of general cargo ships.
