Germany in the early 1930s: Franz Schreker is regarded as one of the most significant opera composers of his era, Mátyás Seiber directs the world's first jazz class in Frankfurt am Main, Ödön Pártos is established in Berlin as a soloist and chamber musician. With the Nazi takeover, all three Jewish musicians are abruptly stripped of their professional rights. Schreker dies in 1934 from a heart attack; the younger Seiber and Pártos emigrate in different directions and build themselves a new musical home under difficult circumstances.
Mieczysław Weinberg's fate is also shaped by the political situation: in 1939 he must flee Warsaw before the advancing Wehrmacht, traveling through Minsk to Tashkent.
That these four voices have not fallen silent and that their works today enrich the concert canon is a gift - to which this concert gives space.
