Hamburg is the German state with the most millionaires and several billionaires - while simultaneously having a poverty risk rate of 19.5%. This coexistence of extremes is the starting point for ARME ARME REICHE REICHE.

Two writers researched poverty and wealth in Hamburg and Germany, each producing their own piece. For REICHE REICHE, Dagrun Hintze conducted numerous interviews with people touched by wealth, exploring possible connections between luck, money, justice and society. Sean Keller's ARME ARME is about all kinds of poor: tall, small, large, thin, old. Working poor, homeless poor, invisible poor. And whenever the piece risks becoming too sentimental or socially romanticised, the invisible hand of the market delivers a sharp correction.

In the first half of the evening, three performers explore the theme of wealth through movement patterns drawn from ballroom dancing, layered with statements from wealthy people. Video sequences featuring wealth researcher Rudolf Martin travelling through Hamburg are woven in between. The second half pursues the lives of people in poverty through ever-changing approaches and different artistic means, showing how poverty is systemically shaped and how it persists.
