Emilia Roig
Kulturhaus Karlstorbahnhof, Heidelberg, Germany
Emilia Roig, a political scientist with a doctorate, became known for her book "Why We Matter. Das Ende der Unterdrückung" - a widely discussed work in which she describes, through her family history, how systems of power and oppression reproduce themselves and how they can be resisted. The French author, daughter of a Jewish-Algerian father and a mother from Martinique, has lived and worked in Berlin for 20 years.
Her new book "Lieber Sohn oder So rettest du die Welt" is a call for radical care as an antidote to capitalist excess and protofascist movements. Roig employs the letter form, previously used by James Baldwin and Ta-Nehisi Coates, to address the next generation: "I write to you because I believe that you - that we all - can choose a different path."
