GESPRÄCHSBEDARF - ON THE STATE OF EASTERN GERMANY

This evening marks the launch of the new Literaturhaus Hamburg series "Gesprächsbedarf", which brings together current non-fiction titles and makes room for in-depth conversation. The opening event focuses on two books about the socio-political situation in the East - timed between the Saxony election on 1 September and the Thuringia vote on 22 September.

Author Paula Fürstenberg (from Potsdam) presents her new book "Niewiedervereinigung - 100 Zwischenrufe zur deutschen Einheit" (Kiepenheuer & Witsch). Drawing on her own biography, she traces how a new nationalism took root at the very moment of reunification, and asks what kind of language can do justice to the diversity of our society. Marieke Reimann, originally from Rostock, journalist and former deputy editor-in-chief of SWR, has written "Zweite Wende - Warum Ostdeutschland uns alle angeht" (Rowohlt), a book that weaves personal reportage together with political analysis.

Moderated by: Wiebke Hollersen

The "Gesprächsbedarf" series is supported by ZEIT STIFTUNG BUCERIUS.
