Between boldness and hesitation - portraits of "old women"
With "Alte Frauen" (Ullstein), Verena Lueken has written a book about freedom in old age that cuts against social clichés. She traces the life paths of writers and artists - among them Vivian Gornick, Jane Campbell, Carmen Herrera, and Lucinda Childs. Some of the women portrayed reinvented themselves late in life; others simply kept going and achieved international recognition in old age. The eleven portraits add up to a narrative about courage, fresh starts, subversive energy, and visibility.
Verena Lueken shaped the arts pages of the F.A.Z. for many years as a writer and critic, and has received several awards including the International Prize for Journalism.
