The centrepiece of the concert is the piano suite Southway by J. Kleeb, which draws on musical themes and soundscapes from indigenous and Afro-South American culture. The programme is rounded out by works from Brazil, Venezuela, and Argentina.
Since the 20th century, classical and folk piano music from South America has grown into a significant expression of cultural identity. The encounter between European, indigenous, and African influences gave rise to distinct forms such as samba, baião, tango, calypso, joropo, and many other dances and styles.
The concert serves as the musical opening of the anniversary year of Semana Latina at the Waggonhalle, which celebrates its 20th anniversary from 20 to 27 September 2026.
