The Fisherman and His Wife - A Play About Wishing

A fisherman and his wife live in an old hut by the sea, with barely more than the bare essentials. One day the fisherman catches an enormous flounder, who begs to be set free - and the fisherman lets him go. Back home, he is met with bitter reproaches from his wife.

She sends him back to the sea: the flounder must conjure up a fine house. But the house soon feels too small. She demands a palace, then a castle, wants to be king and finally pope. The flounder grants her every wish - until she claims the right to be God himself. At that point, everything collapses like a house of cards.

Hamburger Puppentheater tells this well-known fairy tale as a play about wishing - and about when wishes turn into greed.
