Annette Ramelsberger is a court reporter for Süddeutscher Zeitung who has covered all major trials over the past twenty years. In her lecture, she explores questions that have haunted her throughout this work: What does it do to a person when they encounter people in the courtroom who have committed terrible acts? Can you sympathize with a murderer? Can you feel compassion for terrorists? And what about the victims and their families, who often suffer for the rest of their lives?
In her book "Am Abgrund", she describes her experience of the major NSU trial (438 days of proceedings over five years) - as well as the trial against Anders Breivik, who killed 77 people in Oslo and on Utøya, the proceedings against Uli Hoeneß and Alfons Schubeck, and the trial against former RAF terrorist Andrea Klette.
Ramelsberger has received numerous awards for her work: she was journalist of the year, received the Bavarian Order of Merit, and most recently the Munich Press Prize.
