When Helen's father dies, she loses herself in grief - and in memories of the time they spent birdwatching and exploring nature together. Obsessed with the idea of training a hawk herself, she brings the imposing bird Mabel home to Cambridge: freezer stocked with meat, phone switched off. As she teaches Mabel to hunt and fly independently, she realises how much she has neglected her own life in the process.
