How ideology penetrated life and changed it
Julia Boyd and Angelika Patel examine the Allgäu village of Oberstdorf in their narrative non-fiction book "A Village in the Third Reich" (Hogrefe 2026). Drawing on archival materials, letters, interviews, and memoirs, they create an intimate portrait of Germany under Adolf Hitler - from the perspective of villagers, where the grand becomes visible in the small.
At the book premiere, Angelika Patel speaks with Cornelia Zetzsche about the mechanisms of this contemptuous ideology - and about the question the book inevitably raises: What would I have done?
