When Rag Doll formed in 2012, singer Käthe von T. and pianist Amy Protscher agreed on one thing: Bessie Smith is to blame for drawing them into the music of the 1920s. The emotional intensity and rough-edged but honest humour of the "Empress of the Blues" and her contemporaries - Ma Rainey, Ethel Waters, Alberta Hunter - keeps pulling these Berlin musicians back into that golden era and its stories.

Completing the lineup is Tanja Becker, whose furious trombone virtuosity rounds out the classic Bessie Smith trio format. Together the three musicians take their audience on a journey through ragtime, boogie woogie, Harlem stride and barrelhouse.
