AND NOW HANAU — Kulturhaus Karlstorbahnhof, Heidelberg
Description was written before the event

A theatre production by Theaterhaus Stuttgart - guest performance at HEIDELBERGER THEATERTAGEN 2026.

On 19 February 2020, nine people were murdered in Hanau for racist motives; another man died in January 2026 from complications of a gunshot wound. AND NOW HANAU reconstructs the events of that night and poses questions that remain unanswered to this day: Why were emergency exits locked? Why was the emergency call centre insufficiently staffed? Why do the public prosecutor and police show obvious reluctance in clarifying what happened?

Tuğsal Moğul (playwright, director, actor and physician, born 1969 in Neubeckum/Westphalia) developed the play together with the Initiative 19 February - an organization of victims' families and survivors. As part of a research project, they bring the events to the stage as documentary theatre, giving voice to those affected. For guest performances, a technically simplified version of the Stuttgart production was created; with this version, the Stuttgart ensemble performs at Karlstorbahnhof in Heidelberg on 2 October 2026.

Following the performance, there will be a discussion with director Werner Schretzmeier and the acting ensemble. The play is recommended for ages 17 and up / upper secondary school students; teachers are strongly advised to prepare their group beforehand - preparatory and follow-up materials are provided. Duration: approximately 1 hour 25 minutes.
