Isabella Caldart - "Die Stadt, die sie schrieben". Book Launch — Künstler*innenhaus Mousonturm, Frankfurt

"New York City is not just the city these authors wrote about. Above all, it is the city we all love."

In "Die Stadt, die sie schrieben" (The City They Wrote), Isabella Caldart brings together essays on more than 20 women writers who shaped the iconography of New York yet remain unjustly overshadowed by their male counterparts. The selection reflects the city's cultural breadth: voices little known outside Germany - such as Jewish poet Emma Lazarus (whose poem "The New Colossus" is engraved on the base of the Statue of Liberty) and undercover journalist Nellie Bly - appear alongside Siri Hustvedt and Fran Lebowitz; Dorothy Parker's social satire meets subculture icons like Kathy Acker and Leslie Feinberg; the migrant perspectives of Daphne Palasi Andreades and Lisa Ko find their place next to Edith Wharton as chronicler of New York around 1900.

Isabella Caldart, born in Frankfurt am Main, is a freelance journalist covering literature, pop culture, and society. She manages the social-media accounts of the German Book Prize, works as an editor and moderator, and has published several books - most recently a biography of Nirvana in the Reclam "100 Seiten" series. She has lived in Barcelona and Berlin, among other cities, and spends extended periods in New York City on a regular basis.
