Rembetiko - The Blues of Greece
Fischhalle Harburg, Hamburg, Germany
Singers Stella Tsianios and Stella Morgenstern celebrate the female voices of rembetiko - the voices that once made this music popular. Rembetiko emerged as an urban subculture in the port taverns of Athens, Thessaloniki, and Piraeus, created by people stripped of their homeland who carried the trauma of migration. The rebellious rhythms of this music express their protest - and their dignity.
"The Blues of Greece," as rembetiko is also known, is deeply connected to the history of the Greek diaspora, was once banned, and today is recognized as UNESCO World Cultural Heritage.
Together with Lefteris Gioro and Kostas Smyrnios from the Athenians, Stella & Stella have assembled a repertoire that, in the finest Café-Aman tradition, combines old Greek love songs and songs about the concerns of ordinary people. The evening centers on the female singers of rembetiko who boldly raised their voices and profoundly shaped this expressive music.
