beyond the cypher - performance · residency showing · jam

Showing & Jam concludes the Beyond the Cypher dance project. Two new choreographic works meet an open jam with DJ - an afternoon of performance, dance and encounter.

Beyond the Cypher · Residency Showing

Starting from the cypher - a central space for exchange, expression and community in street and clubstyle dance culture - Beyond the Cypher examines what happens when this space is translated into a performative context. Between being watched and letting go, self-doubt and connection, the work explores what occurs within us when we dance, show ourselves and meet one another. A search for the moment when from a smaller I perhaps emerges a larger we.

Samp and Beans with My Aunt · Excerpt

A choreographic engagement with mixed-race identity in South Africa during and after apartheid. Drawing from personal family stories, Yasmine Calasse explores questions of origin, belonging and the contradictions of a mixed heritage. In an intimate setting reminiscent of a shared family meal, memory, joy and sorrow meet a movement language rooted in rhythm, body percussion and physicality.

Jam

After the performances, the space opens: with DJ, music and an open cypher, the shift moves from watching to dancing together. The jam is open to everyone who wants to dance, come together or simply stay and share the energy.
