Mozart in Brazil

A musical dialogue between the Old and New Worlds: the programme spans from Mozart through Milhaud to Villa-Lobos and a world premiere by Venezuelan composer Efraín Oscher.

Darius Milhaud, who returned to Paris after years as a cultural attaché in Brazil, composed the eccentric ballet "Le boeuf sur le toit" based on a sketch by Jean Cocteau - set in the shadowy world of bars, rich with jazzy and Brazilian rhythms. Brazilian Heitor Villa-Lobos, known for his Bachianas Brasileiras as a tribute to the Leipzig Thomaskantor, wrote the light-footed Sinfonietta No. 1 "In Memory of Mozart". Mozart himself is represented by his Symphony No. 29 in A major KV 201, in which youthful exuberance meets compositional maturity.

The centrepiece of the evening is the world premiere of a Violin Concerto by Efraín Oscher, which he composed specifically for the concertmaster of the Mitteldeutsche Kammerphilharmonie Schönebeck, his fellow countryman Alejandro Carrillo. Oscher's second Barroqueana Venezolana was performed by this orchestra several years ago.
