About: Amaro Freitas

A pianist who grew up practicing on imaginary keys in Recife's favelas, Freitas has built a sound that runs from Afro-Brazilian ritual rhythms straight into avant-garde jazz territory - his 2024 album Y'Y, a tribute to the Amazon, brought him the 2026 Paul Acket Award at North Sea Jazz Festival.
