George Orwell (1903–1950) was a British novelist and essayist known for his sharp critique of totalitarianism and social injustice. His allegorical novella Animal Farm (1945) and the dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four are among the most influential works of 20th-century literature.

Animal Farm is George Orwell's 1945 satirical novella in which farm animals overthrow their human farmer and attempt to build an egalitarian society. The story is an allegory of Soviet totalitarianism, tracing how revolutionary ideals are gradually corrupted - summed up in the line "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others." It remains one of the most widely read political allegories of the 20th century.
