Heidelberg Castle (Schloss Heidelberg) is a celebrated Renaissance and Gothic ruin towering above the old town on the Königstuhl hillside. Dating back to the 13th century, it served as the residence of the Electors Palatine and houses one of the world's largest wine barrels, the Great Tun. Today it hosts open-air theatre performances, concerts, and the famous Heidelberger Schlossfestspiele.
