About: Gaetano Donizetti

Born in Bergamo in 1797, Donizetti composed at a pace few rivals could match - over 70 operas in roughly 25 years - and his bel canto writing for the voice set a standard that singers still measure themselves against today. From the Gothic tragedy of Lucia di Lammermoor to the warm comedy of L'elisir d'amore, his range was extraordinary.
