Tchaikovsky's 1877 score - brought to life in its canonical form by Petipa and Ivanov at the Mariinsky in 1895 - tells of a prince who falls for a princess cursed to live as a swan. The pas de deux, the Dance of the Little Swans and the white-tutu corps de ballet have become the defining images of classical dance.
