Claire Waldoff - Different from the Rest! - Songs and Life of a Queer Cabaret Icon of the 1920s
Volksbühne im Großen Hirschgraben, Frankfurt, Germany
25 €
Claire Waldoff was different from the rest. A native of Westphalia who won over Berlin audiences as the "Berlin girl" - witty, unconventional, and openly in love with women. With her striking presence and distinctive voice, she sang couplets - sometimes crude and cheeky, sometimes tender and sentimental - and became a legend of German cabaret, an icon of nonconformity.
Ulrike Kinbach and Markus Neumeyer on piano accompany Claire Waldoff with songs, texts, and fictional scenes into the glittering cabaret world of the 1920s and 1930s and into the lesbian-feminist scene of that era. An evening about nonconformity and authenticity, and the power of humor as a tool of resistance.
Performed and written by Ulrike Kinbach
Musical direction and piano Markus Neumeyer
Directed by Ingrid El Sigai
dramaturgy Jo van Nelsen
Running time approximately 100 minutes with one intermission
