This novel made Jenny Erpenbeck an internationally celebrated author. The partly autobiographical stories span generations, all set in a house by a Brandenburg lake between 1906 and 2002. From the Weimar Republic through National Socialism and the building of the GDR to German reunification, Erpenbeck traces and interweaves the fates of individual people - each searching, in their own era, for a home on this same plot of land.

The characters draw us into the contradictions of their time and their lives. Each story is a separate fate, each person carrying a deeply private view of the world - shaped and marked by the social pressures of their age.
