Ein Quantum Trotz

Children are always pointed at with an apologetic shrug: "They're just going through the defiance phase.". Screaming, throwing things, refusing to listen - "Defiance phase!". Lying on the supermarket floor in front of the sweets aisle, flailing all four limbs at once until you start wishing for an exorcist - "Defiance phase! It'll pass.". Will it really?
Looking at humanity as a whole, it seems we're all collectively stuck in a defiance phase. We defy everything and everyone - the weather, our parents, our boss, our governments, the feeling of fullness (just one more, go on!) - and above all, reason itself. We don't do it out of conviction or good cause, but out of sheer spite; often even against our better judgment. Yet defiance, when well-directed, can actually do some good. It can help heal, topple regimes, and get us through crises.
Armed with a licence to fool around and acting on behalf of Their Humorousness, we defy defiance itself. Not because we can - but in spite of everything!
