Prof. Dr. Gabriele Krone-Schmalz · Russia - Where Do We Go from Here?

Relations between Russia and the West have hit rock bottom. Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, ties that were already strained have reached a historic low and seem unlikely to recover any time soon. Yet a new European peace order that includes Russia remains necessary - the country is part of our continent.
How did it come to this, when the East-West confrontation seemed to have been resolved by the late 1980s? How can the escalation spiral be stopped? What role can diplomacy play? Do sanctions help? What about arms deliveries? What futures are even conceivable? And how far is society willing to go in supporting Ukraine if doing so damages its own interests - economically and in terms of peace?
All these existential questions need to be debated openly, respectfully, and on the basis of facts in a democratic society.
Krone-Schmalz offers an analysis of how events have unfolded so far and takes a careful look at what may lie ahead.
Gabriele Krone-Schmalz was ARD's Russia correspondent from 1987 to 1991 and went on to host the ARD-Kulturweltspiegel until 1997. From 2011 to 2022 she was a professor of television and journalism at Hochschule Iserlohn.
