Gioachino Rossini: Overture to "William Tell"
Matthew Hindson: "Rock Star" - Concerto for amplified cello and orchestra
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Symphony No. 41 in C major K. 551 "Jupiter"
A remarkably varied programme awaits under the baton of Japanese conductor Ryusuke Numajiri. It opens at full gallop: the overture to Rossini's opera about the hero William Tell is perhaps the most breathlessly racing music in the classical repertoire - almost as if a lone rider were charging through the Wild West. The world premiere of "Rock Star" carries its own heroic charge: Australian composer Matthew Hindson, GSO's Composer in Focus for the 2024/25 season, wrote this concerto for amplified cello and orchestra, which his compatriot cellist Benett Tsai will perform. The first Sunday matinee then closes on a celestial note with Mozart's Jupiter Symphony - a fitting name for a work that has outlasted the centuries with effortless grace.
