Francis Beeding's novel, which Hitchcock later adapted into the film Spellbound, was originally published under the title "Das Haus von Dr. Edwardes". Though "house" is something of an understatement - Château Landry is a medieval castle. Here, Dr. Edwardes runs a renowned psychiatric clinic. Two new doctors are expected: Dr. Murchison, a psychiatrist, and the newly qualified Dr. Constance Sedgwick, who arrives to find that Dr. Edwardes has left - he himself has suffered a nervous breakdown. On top of that, a new patient plagued by obsessions, personally admitted by Dr. Murchison, has killed a guard. The other patients seem to flourish under the methods of the brilliant young doctor - until the deranged killer suddenly claims to be Murchison himself. Will Constance see through the sinister danger lurking in the castle?
