Summer has a great reputation. At last the sun stays out for more than a few hours; at last coats and heavy jackets can stay in the wardrobe, and in Hamburg - famously, even at 10 degrees - pizza and white wine on a terrace become a real option. But honestly, aren't we overselling summer? Isn't it also the season of mosquitoes and slugs, sunburn and packed beaches, the relentless smell of the neighbour's barbecue drifting over the balcony? Sensible people retreat indoors precisely in summer - to the sofa or the bed - unbothered by tropical temperatures, quietly reading good books.

Which good, season-proof books those might be is exactly what this evening sets out to answer. Two people who have been sharing their subjective - though of course objectively intended - recommendations on the Literaturhaus stage for over twenty years: Annemarie Stoltenberg, the sharp-tongued NDR literary expert, and Rainer Moritz, equally critical and easily ignited. They'll bring at least 16 books to the evening - titles that hold up in rain and sunshine alike. And Can Mayaoglu, the bookseller at Literaturhaus, will pull a favourite from her beach bag too.
