No other composer enriched the early clarinet repertoire with more outstanding works than Carl Maria von Weber, who died 200 years ago - with the possible exception of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the husband of Weber's cousin Constanze. The season opener of the chamber music series at the hr-Sendesaal in Frankfurt makes the musical case for this claim. Both of these related giants of music history were inspired to write for this richly voiced woodwind instrument - including the quintets for clarinet and string quartet heard here - by the foremost virtuosos of their day: Mozart by his friend Anton Stadler, Weber by his friend Heinrich Baermann. As principal clarinettist of the hr-Sinfonieorchester, Tomaž Močilnik is the natural choice for these chamber gems, joined by the Hába Quartett, who round out the programme with a late string quartet by Joseph Haydn.
