Youn Sun Nah - Lost Pieces

Lost Pieces, the new album by South Korean singer, songwriter and composer Youn Sun Nah, is a captivating journey of self-discovery and self-acceptance. Though the album's overarching theme may initially seem melancholic, it ultimately becomes a message of empowerment. The eleven songs explore doubt in love, in others, and in oneself from multiple angles. They address loss, separation, and the complexity of relationships. Youn Sun Nah's emotional state shaped the album's artistic direction as she conceived it.

As with her moving 2022 album Waking World, she has written and composed Lost Pieces entirely on her own. The recording reflects her interest in diverse musical styles. She intuitively combines seemingly incompatible indie-pop sensibilities with free jazz vocabulary and delicate folk-song touches. Yet the new compositions follow her wholly individual approach. The haunting title track, for instance, was originally conceived as a tribute to Steve Reich's minimalist approach and featured extremely sparse instrumentation. Ultimately, however, it became the most densely arranged piece on the album, with brass, marimba, and strings gently yielding space to one another, together setting the stage for some of Youn Sun Nah's most impressive vocal performances to date.

In 2019, the artist was named Officier des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture for her brilliant artistic skill. Her vocal style has remained diverse, ranging from subtle to explosive guttural sounds. On Lost Pieces, she surpasses herself vocally, as the album's central theme demands a wide range of vocal approaches.
