The four dances from the ballet "Estancia" are the most frequently performed work by Argentine composer Alberto Ginastera. The story is set on a cattle ranch in the Argentine pampas - and the music sounds accordingly raw and direct. Driving rhythms meet images of vast, open landscape.

The "Sinfonietta-concerto" for flute and string orchestra - expanded with piccolo, harp and percussion - was composed by Catalan composer Xavier Montsalvatge in 2001, shortly before his death. The solo instrument shines with virtuosity amid Mediterranean warmth, seasoned with a touch of neo-classical dissonance.

From Barcelona the journey continues to Andalusia, where "El amor brujo" - "Love, the Magician" - unfolds. Like "Estancia", it is a love story, but one haunted by ghosts. Manuel de Falla's score draws deeply on Andalusian folk music while also capturing the tenderness of romance and the chill of the uncanny...
