Roland Maria Stangier studied with Zsolt Gárdonyi in Würzburg and Daniel Roth in Paris. As a scholarship holder of the Berlin Allied Airlift Memorial Fund, he was the first organist to receive this award, using the time for studies in Paris and Strasbourg with Daniel Roth and André Fleury.

After positions as cantor in Schopfheim (1982/83) and Berlin (1983-91), he served from 1991 to 1995 as cantor and organist at the main church of St. Petri in Hamburg and director of the Hamburger Bachchor. In 1994 he was appointed professor of organ and organ improvisation at the Folkwang Universität der Künste in Essen. From 1998 to 2000 he was chief organist of the Reformed City Church in Solothurn (Switzerland), from 2003 to 2017 custodian of the Kuhn organ at the Philharmonie Essen, and from 2009 to 2023 organ curator at the Philharmonie Mercatorhalle Duisburg.

Stangier founded the International Improvisation Competition Maurice Duruflé Hamburg and has recorded numerous CDs.
