Irish tradition is like a battery that has been recharging itself for centuries. The energy and joy it gives you flows back with every session, every concert, keeping the cycle alive. Those who take part give a lot and get a lot in return. Happiness shared with others is always stronger than happiness experienced alone. Collective memory and shared experience connect people. It's "gold dust in your pocket", something you rediscover again and again whenever you slip on the coat of tradition.

The IFF brings four programme acts that couldn't be more different from one another - yet at the session, the evening's highlight, they come together into one shimmering rainbow. An Irish myth holds that a treasure is hidden at the end of the rainbow, a symbol of longing, luck and the dream of the unattainable. And perhaps that's exactly what has always drawn us in: setting out on the search, knowing full well that the end of the rainbow can never be reached.

BRIAN LEACH - Master of the hammered dulcimer

Brian Leach's music is a spherical sound universe - traditional, progressive folk on the hammered dulcimer, full of depth and magic. Traditional melodies merge with expansive, freely improvised sound arcs and pulsing rhythms. The hammered dulcimer - a struck zither found across many cultures - is relatively rare in Irish tradition, but it suits it perfectly.
