Giovanni Sollima opens the festival - the boundary-crossing cellist who had to cancel in 2025 returns with a programme full of surprises. He weaves together traditional music from several cultures, his own compositions, and improvisations on Haydn's themes, while also shining a light on the baryton: a nearly forgotten instrument once played by Prince Nikolaus I Esterházy himself, for whom Haydn wrote around 160 works. In Hitzacker the baryton appears in two trios - one composed by Luigi Tomasini, who played in Haydn's court orchestra at the time - as well as in arrangements made specially for this concert. Guest Ulrike Becker of Lautten Compagney Berlin brings her baryton, joined by Catherina Lendle Wille and the festival's artistic director.
