Up de Walvis - The Borkum Musical

The folk-costume group of the Verein Borkumer Jungens association created the musical "Up de Walvis" a few years ago to keep alive the memory of Borkum's whaling era. The story revolves around pirates, whalers and courageous women, brought to life with traditional costumes, folk dances and sea shanties.

The plot draws on the legend of the feared pirate "Black Rolf", who is outwitted and put to flight by the women of Borkum. Island women and children, pirates and whalers are all portrayed with vivid expressiveness on stage.

Custom-built sets are crafted specifically for the Kulturinsel stage: half a ship, an entire village, or a full school classroom - each piece tailored to fit the stage exactly. "Up de Walvis" is back again this year.
