Michelle is in her early thirties when her life in the east of the country falls apart. She leaves everything behind and starts over: as a hotel receptionist, she encounters luxury, West German wealth - and Henry. A man who had completely different starting opportunities than her, who never lacked for anything. They fall in love, despite all their differences, and for the first time Michelle's life seems free from worry. But is love alone enough when their biographies are so different and doubts run so deep?

The novel explores ambitions for advancement, fears of decline, and the question of what freedom and peace of mind truly cost.
