Benjamin Carter is from Wellington, New Zealand. He has played piano and cello since early childhood. In 2021, he performed with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra (NZSO) in the first movement of Grieg's Piano Concerto under the direction of James Judd. Since then, he has regularly performed with the orchestra on both piano and cello, and also gave a piano concert for the 75th anniversary of the NZSO. In 2022, he began his piano studies at the New Zealand School of Music with Dr. Jian Liu thanks to the generous support of the Deane Endowment Trust. From 2021 to 2023, he was principal cellist of the NZSO National Youth Orchestra and won first prize at the New Zealand Young Performing Arts Awards in the cello category in 2022.

In 2023, he performed Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21 with the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra and won third prize at the 5th International Mozart Competition for Young Musicians in Zhuhai, where he performed the same concerto with the Salzburg Chamber Soloists and was awarded for the best interpretation of a Chinese work. He is currently in his second year at the Royal College of Music studying piano with Prof. Vanessa Latarche and cello with Prof. Richard Harwood (as an ABRSM Scholar).
