Woyzeck is at the very bottom of the social ladder. To support his girlfriend Marie and their child, he scrambles from one odd job to the next: shaving a military captain on a regular basis and submitting to a highly dubious medical experiment that puts him on a diet of nothing but peas. In doing so, Woyzeck becomes a pawn of society.

Gradually he drifts into a world of his own, filled with delusions and violent fantasies. Hunted, driven, tormented - he begins to seem more like a "trained animal" than a free man. When he is forced to watch his beloved Marie - the mother of his child - betray him with another man, far more attractive and socially privileged, Woyzeck loses his last grip on reality. He reaches for a knife...
