Dantons Tod - a play by and after Georg Büchner

"The revolution must stop and the republic must begin." France, late 18th century: what happens when a citizens' revolution - one that set out to topple royal rule and win freedom, equality and fraternity for all - threatens to spiral out of control and betray its own ideals?

In "Dantons Tod", Georg Büchner uses the French Revolution and its historically documented figures to show how quickly former allies can fracture into hostile camps - and that a shared enemy alone is not enough to sustain a lasting movement for freedom. The play is at once a history play, a courtroom drama, and a call for political action that has lost none of its edge.

Junge Bühne Mainz - known beyond the region for their "Woyzeck" adaptation, running for over 12 years - brings this new production from 2026 as another artistic engagement with Büchner's work.
