The Silly Augustine - A Circus Fairy Tale by Otfried Preußler

The circus has come to town... and with it the world-famous silly August - the king of clowns and star of the ring. While the popular clown delights audiences twice daily in the circus performance, his wife - the silly Augustine - has her hands full in the trailer behind the circus tent: helping the clown children Gugga and Guggo with their homework, caring for the clown baby Guggilein, washing the colorful costumes, baking and cooking, keeping the circus wagon clean, and managing the entire household. Yet deep in her heart, Augustine dreams of being a star of the ring herself and performing as a clown in the circus arena. The silly August shows no understanding for his wife's artistic ambitions and is annoyed by the director's efforts to modernize the program more and more... But then an unexpected opportunity arises for Augustine to perform in the ring. Will she manage to captivate the audience and make them laugh?

Since September 2025, the Grand Theater Hall at M8 Mainz, where Junge Bühne Mainz performs, regularly transforms into the glittering ring of the fictional Circus Augustini. The production tells Otfried Preußler's children's book classic about emancipation and equality in a new, original stage adaptation - on stage and additionally in a real circus ring in the center of the hall.
