Son Rompe Pera - ZMF Freiburg

Mexican band Son Rompe Pera thrill crowds with their cumbia-punk and virtuoso marimba playing. The Gama brothers started on the traditional instrument as children. When teenage rebellion hit, they turned to punk and psychobilly. Now the circle is complete - with their fusion of rock and the classic instrument, they lead the contemporary international cumbia scene.

Live, this garage-cumbia-marimba-punk outfit never disappoints, getting dance fans working up a serious sweat. Their authenticity shines through in modern takes on Mexican, Peruvian and Colombian classics, their own tracks, and the occasional surprising cover. The contrast between the traditional marimba and their youthful, street-style attitude connects the audience to the past while dancing into the future.

Son Rompe Pera released their debut album in March 2020, right as the Covid-19 pandemic hit. They built their following through weekend sets at Parque Mexico, winning over masked and socially distanced fans. They were invited for an 'at home' live session at KEXP and selected as the official band for the international music conference WOMEX in both 2020 and 2022.

In 2025 the group supported Gogol Bordello on ten European dates. Now they make their first appearance at ZMF in Freiburg im Breisgau.
