The Hamburg blues icon turns 80!
When Hamburg's music scene talks about blues, one name usually comes up first: Abi Wallenstein. For over 50 years, Abi Wallenstein has won the hearts of blues fans with his warm charisma and achieved legendary status. In December, the Hamburg blues legend celebrates his 80th birthday and shows that even at a respectable age, he can still play with great verve, setting the blues ablaze.
His unique fingerpicking style is a fascinating blend of Delta blues and rock elements: powerful, rhythmic, and full of playful joy. But above all, it is Wallenstein's voice that captivates. It sounds hoarse and smoky, yet carries so much heart and soul in its swinging tones that any technically perfect singing pales in comparison. Like no one else, he effortlessly draws the audience into his world.
At Abi's side stands British harmonica master Steve Baker. His playing is funky, melodic, and elegant. Drawing from the blues tradition, he combines elements of country, folk, funk, and rock into an exciting and individual fusion that directly touches the hearts of listeners and creates a creative tension that fascinates.
Rhythm guitarist Martin Röttger also contributes significantly to the music with his sometimes explosive, sometimes elastic beats. Like no other, he understands how to perfectly capture Wallenstein's distinctive grooves and support them with confidence.
The light interplay of the four musicians is unique and leads to magnificent moments that spontaneously emerge from the improvisational flow. Instead of sterile perfection, the three musicians rely on pure, embodied emotion.
