Sinfoniekonzert Con Brio Würzburg — Hochschule für Musik, Würzburg

A Journey Through Music

Con Brio Orchestra Performs Britten, Mahler and Dvořák

The Würzburg Symphony Orchestra Con Brio presents enchanting music from late Romanticism and moderate modernism in its summer programme. The centrepiece of the concert is Antonín Dvořák's celebrated Ninth Symphony "From the New World". Before that, the musical journey begins with Benjamin Britten's "Four Sea Interludes" (from the opera "Peter Grimes"), travelling across vast seas, and continues with Gustav Mahler's "Songs of a Wayfarer" into the depths of the romantic soul. The soloist in Mahler's songs is baritone Jakob Ewert, a member of the Chemnitz Theatre ensemble, an artist in demand on opera stages, in concert halls and radio studios, who has already captivated audiences at the Würzburg Mozart Festival. The concert is conducted, as always, by Prof. Gert Feser. Tickets are available through Reservix and at all major ticket outlets.

In his opera "Peter Grimes", Benjamin Britten tells the horrifying story of a fisherman who ultimately dies in madness at sea. The dramatic operatic action is repeatedly interrupted by instrumental interludes, from which Britten selected several and compiled them into a suite under the title "Four Sea Interludes".

From the literary themes of wandering and longed-for but unattainable love, Gustav Mahler created the cycle "Songs of a Wayfarer". The four songs reflect - as is often the case in Mahler's work - painful experiences from the composer's life and showcase the full refinement of Mahler's sense of sound.

Antonín Dvořák's Ninth Symphony "From the New World" rightly bears its title, for the composer wrote the symphony not only during a stay in America but also incorporated motifs from the country's folk music. Overall, however, the symphonic spirit of "Bohemia's woods and fields" triumphs in the work.
