Hollywood and orchestral music have been intertwined since the earliest days of sound film. Composers like Erich Wolfgang Korngold and Miklós Rózsa brought the tradition of European concert music into the film studios, shaping the distinctive Hollywood sound: lush orchestral textures, memorable themes and emotional crescendos that bring images to life.

Korngold's Violin Concerto pairs virtuoso solo writing with cinematic storytelling. Bernard Herrmann's Vertigo Suite makes suspense and psychological drama directly audible. Bernstein's "On the Waterfront" shows how jazz, symphonic form and film music can fuse into a distinctly American musical voice.
